How to Prepare for Your College Grad Photos
Graduating college is such a big deal, and your photos should feel just as special as the moment. They're not only for announcements or Instagram, they're memories you'll look back on and be proud of. Here's how to make sure you show up confident and ready for your session with me:
1. Book Early
Campus gets busy around graduation time, especially if you're at a larger school. Booking early gives us the best chance to get your preferred time, location, and light (golden hour is always my favorite!). I always suggest scheduling 4-6 weeks before your actual graduation date. It keeps things stress-free and ensures we beat the crowds.
2. Choose Your Outfit
My grad sessions include one outfit, so pick something that feels like you but also photographs beautifully. You'll definitely want your cap and gown, but think about what's underneath: a nice dress, jumpsuit, or a clean, classic shirt or suit. If your school gives you cords, stoles, or medals, bring them, they add such a nice touch. And please, steam or iron everything the night before so it looks polished and wrinkle-free in your photos.
3. Gather Props and Personal Touches
This is where you can have some fun! Props make your session more personal and memorable. Bring your diploma cover, cap and gown, college sweatshirt, or even something that represents your major. A champagne pop or confetti shot is always a hit (just check campus rules first), and even small details like your class ring or a favorite book can tell your story.
4. Hair, Makeup, and Grooming
You don't have to go all out, but doing a little extra can really make you feel confident. Whether that's getting your hair blown out, curling it yourself, freshening up your makeup, or even getting a quick trim or beard shape-up, those small steps make a big difference. Most importantly, go with a look that still feels like you, you want to recognize yourself in these photos.
5. Timing and Lighting
Lighting is everything. Golden hour (about an hour before sunset) gives us that dreamy, soft glow that's so flattering. If you want a quieter, less crowded campus, mornings are a great option too. We'll plan timing together so you never feel rushed, especially if we're hitting a couple of key spots on campus.
6. Relax and Celebrate
You've worked so hard to get here, and this session is all about celebrating you. I'll guide you through every pose and make sure you feel comfortable the whole time, so there's no need to stress about "what to do with your hands." Come ready to laugh, pop that champagne, toss your cap, and enjoy the moment. These photos are for you, and they should feel like you too.
