Tips for Getting Ready for Your Senior Session

Your senior session is such an exciting time, this is all about celebrating you and this big chapter in your life. I want you to feel prepared, comfortable, and confident, so I put together some of my favorite tips to help you get ready:

1. Plan Outfits Ahead of Time

With two outfit changes, I recommend picking looks that show off different sides of your personality. For example, one outfit can be more casual and relaxed, and the other a little more dressy or bold. This way you'll have variety in your gallery without needing a ton of options. Just make sure everything is clean, wrinkle-free, and comfortable, you don't want to spend your session adjusting clothes.

2. Don't Forget the Details

Accessories really do make a difference. Think jewelry, hats, shoes, or even a favorite jacket that can change up a look. These small touches can add variety without needing another full outfit. Even layering (like adding a denim jacket or cardigan) can give you an extra look without much effort. Pay attention to nails, too, chipped polish or super bright colors can be distracting in close-ups. Neutral tones or a fresh, clean nail look are always timeless. For guys, trimming nails and keeping hands moisturized makes a difference as well, especially since hands often show up in portraits more than you realize.

3. Hair & Makeup

Whether you do it yourself or book with a pro, go for a natural look that still feels like you. A little extra makeup (mascara, blush, lip color) helps your features stand out in photos, but don't feel like you have to do anything over the top if that's not your style. Soft curls, waves, or smooth straight hair always photograph beautifully. If you're worried about humidity or fly-aways, bring a small brush, comb, or hairspray to touch up during the session. Guys, don't forget to give your hair a quick style, trim facial hair if you need to, and use a little product to keep things neat. You'll feel more confident when you're polished.

4. Bring Items That Represent You

This is your session, it should tell your story. Sports gear, instruments, books, hobbies, or even your favorite pair of sneakers can bring your personality into your photos. Props not only make your session more fun, but they also give you something to interact with, which helps you feel more relaxed and natural. Don't be afraid to think outside the box, too. If you love the outdoors, bring a fishing pole, hiking boots, or your favorite flannel. If you're an artist, bring a sketchbook or paintbrushes. These personal touches make your photos stand out and feel even more special.

5. Rest Up

It's simple, but so important, a good night's sleep makes such a difference. When you're rested, your eyes look brighter, your skin looks fresher, and you'll just feel better during your session. Staying up late the night before can leave you feeling tired, and that shows in your photos. If you can. set aside a calm morning leading up to your session too. Rushing around or stressing right before we meet can make it harder to relax at first. Giving yourself time to get ready and breathe will set the tone for a smooth, fun experience.

6. Stay Hydrated & Watch the Sun

Drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to your session helps your skin look its best. It also keeps you feeling more energized and comfortable during the shoot. On the flip side, try to avoid last-minute tanning or heavy sun exposure, since burns, peeling, and tan lines are hard to edit out and can make you feel less confident. If you know your session will be outdoors, don't forget bug spray or sunscreen on areas that won't show in photos, like arms and legs if you're wearing pants. Comfort goes a long way in helping you enjoy your experience.

7. Relax & Have Fun

The most important thing to remember is this: you don't have to be a model to get amazing senior photos. You don't need to know how to pose, that's my job. I'll guide you through everything, so your photos feel natural and authentic to you. Think of this as a fun afternoon where you get to dress up, laugh, and celebrate yourself. The best photos always come when you're comfortable and enjoying the moment, so don't be afraid to let loose, smile big, and just be yourself. Trust me, you're going to look great.

With a little prep, your senior session will be stress-free and so much fun, you'll end up with photos that feel 100% like you.
